Drone Solar Panel Cleaning: Methods and Frequency

Rooftop and utility-scale solar — how drones clean panels and how often cleaning pays back.

Why clean panels

Dust, pollen, bird droppings and agricultural or industrial deposits reduce output. How much depends on location, tilt and rainfall; dusty and dry regions see the biggest losses.

Drone methods

Drones typically rinse panels with purified water, sometimes with a mild detergent for sticky deposits. Some systems carry brushes. Pressure and water quality matter: hard water can leave spots and excessive pressure can damage seals.

Frequency

Many sites clean once or twice a year; dusty sites may clean more often. Compare the cost of cleaning against the lost generation shown in your monitoring data to decide the right interval.

Warranties and access

Check the panel manufacturer’s cleaning guidance so you do not void the warranty, and agree roof access, water supply and electrical safety with the provider before the job.
